about

This recording was an improvisation made one day in 1992 by Paul Abbott and Greg Hoyt, in the Indonesian gamelan room at San Diego State University (where Greg was a music student). My recollection is that these instruments were from Harry Partch's personal collection, that SDSU's music dept. inherited. We walked in with a portable DAT machine and two microphones (iirc, a Shure SM57 and 58), and one hour later walked out with this raw gem.

Neither Greg nor I are/were percussionists. We're both guitarists who enjoyed the percussive aspects of Asian and Eastern folk music. Hopefully, our creativity and enthusiasm made up for our total lack of skill in this musical genre. In reality, this is an audio archive of two friends goofing around and having fun one afternoon. And yet, there seemed to be enough musical substance here to carve out five distinct compositions.

The DAT was buried in a storage box for almost 30 years. It survived moves from San Diego to San Francisco, SF to New York, and NY back to San Diego...and at least a half a dozen (probably more) residences in San Diego.

During COVID-19 quarantine, I felt it was time to transfer this treasure to my computer, master it, and put it online...just to prove it happened.

Enjoy!
